How Long Does It Take To Recover From SUP-ing?

August 18, 2023

As much as we enjoy stand-up paddle boarding (SUP-ing), it isn’t always a labor of love. Rather, sometimes it can be downright difficult, draining, and utterly exhausting. To that end, our team at Atoll Boards has already written several informative blogs that thoroughly detail how to remedy such post-workout burnouts. Whether you’re searching for Self-Care Practices for After a Paddle Boarding Session, How to Reduce Muscle Soreness After an SUP Workout, or just about anything else, our blog has got you covered. That said, there are still a few lingering questions from these discussions that we’d like to further explore. Today, we’ll be answering the classic question, “How long does it take to recover from SUP-ing?” As always, our team at Atoll Boards has everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!

What to Expect in the Days Following an SUP Session

As one would expect, the answer is subjective. In other words, it really depends on the intensity and duration of your workout as well as other variables such as your health, fitness, conditioning, etc. While there are many things you can do help with the recovery process—see the articles linked above as well as How to Stay Hydrated While Stand-up Paddle Boarding and What to Eat After You Go Paddle Boarding—unfortunately, there isn’t a foolproof method for SUP-ing and then feeling absolutely zero pain, muscle soreness, etc.

At the same time, though, there are some relatively universal rules for what to expect in the days following an SUP session. First, it is very normal to feel a healthy ‘burn’ for one or two days after your workout. Secondly, typically speaking, the better shape you’re in, the sooner you can expect to bounce back. Third and most importantly, if you’re still experiencing any significant or serious pain after four or five days, then something may be wrong. If that happens, please seek professional medical help immediately.

It Is Always Better to Be Safe Than Sorry

In any event, it’s important to go soon rather than later, as this lingering pain could indicate a potential injury. Trust us, it is always better to be safe than sorry. On the bright side, if you do your research, take care of yourself, and don’t push too hard, then chances are your paddles will be lovely from start to finish; even if you get a little bit sore and achy from time to time.
