If you’re the proud owner of an inflatable stand-up paddle board (iSUP), such as our signature Atoll Boards, then chances are you’ve probably wondered, “What happens if you overinflate an iSUP?” Or, perhaps more directly, can iSUPs pop or even explode? Well, as always, our team at Atoll Boards has everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!

What is PSI?
First and foremost, we need to take a look at the importance of air pressure and PSI. Now, you’re probably wondering, “What is PSI?” Well, simply put, PSI stands for pounds per square inch. Furthermore, this is the standard unit of measurement for air pressure and will tell you everything you need to know about how to properly inflate your iSUP.
Every Board is Different
Before we dig into PSI measurements, please note that every board is different. While some iSUPs can accommodate a surprisingly large PSI measurement, others simply weren’t built with that level of air pressure in mind. In other words, before you begin to pump up your board, please be sure that you’ve already confirmed its maximum capacity; otherwise, you could run the risk of seriously damaging or even destroying your iSUP.
What is a Good PSI Measurement?
Now, with all of that being said, what is a good PSI measurement? As stated above, it really depends on the iSUP; plus, personal preference can play a role as well. In general, iSUPs typically require 10 to 20 PSI for optimal performance. While 20 PSI will leave your board hard, tough, and rugged, 10 PSI allows for a little more wiggle room as well as a more comfortable standing surface.

In the case of our Atoll Boards, we recommend inflating to a minimum of 10 PSI, as anything below this will negatively impact the performance of your board. On the other hand, we would recommend 15 PSI as the maximum measurement. For our boards, anything more than this is unnecessary.
Can iSUPs Really Pop or Explode?
Now, what happens if somebody overinflates their Atoll Board? Can iSUPs really pop or even explode? The short answer is: yes, iSUPs can pop or explode if they’re filled with way too much air. However, it is important to note that the majority of boards do not depart with such dramatic exits. Rather, most cases of overinflation result in more minor side effects, including busted seams, sneaky leaks, and so much more. In other words, your iSUP doesn’t need to pop or explode in order to suffer some serious damage.
Things You Can Do to Avoid Overinflation
Finally, there are a few things you can do to avoid overinflation. First, as we mentioned above, always be sure that you know the maximum PSI for your board; every model is different, and it’s imperative to have your information in order; otherwise, you risk damaging or even destroying your board. Second, we recommend using an electric pump, as they can automatically turn off once your board has reached the desired PSI; that way, overinflation is practically impossible. Lastly, when in doubt, let us help you figure it out. Whether it’s one of our iSUPs or any other model on the market, our entire team would be more than happy to help. After all, like any other group of people, the SUP community is better and stronger when we all work together.
