As much as we love the combination of summer and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP-ing), it’s always important to do so safely. After all, if you’re out there working up a sweat and there isn’t a cool breeze in sight, SUP-ing can quickly switch from awesome to awful. This is, of course, if you don’t know how to prepare for stand-up paddling in summer. That’s precisely why our team of SUP experts is here today – to help you have the best paddles possible. Now, with all of that in mind, we have everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!

Check the Weather and Dress Accordingly
First of all, be sure to check the weather before you start getting ready. Trust us, you don’t want to be too warm out there, especially if you’re hoping for a lengthy SUP session. That said, take a moment to check out our in-depth guide of what to wear while SUP-ing in summer. In short, before you do anything else, check the weather and dress accordingly; it will make the rest of the day infinitely easier.
Hydrate in Advance
Equally important, hydrate in advance. Not just when you’re out there on the water, but also before you leave the house! As a matter of fact, SUP experts recommend drinking at least one liter of water before you even begin to paddle. While this has many general health benefits, it is especially helpful for staying at peak performance levels throughout your paddle. Schedule a Check-in Phone Call
Last but certainly not least, before you head out, schedule a check-in phone call with one of your friends, family members, etc. In other words, tell them about your scheduled paddle, ask them to call you at a specific time, and then, when they call, tell them how your paddle is going. This little tip serves a few different purposes. First, it keeps your loved ones in the loop. Second, if for any reason you need something during your SUP session, you’ll have at least one person who is already prepared, knows where to find you, etc. Finally, and most importantly, if something would ever go wrong—such as heatstroke, exhaustion, severe dehydration, or any other heat-related issues—you’ll have someone on standby who is ready to help, there for you when you need them most, and, of course, planning on calling you either way. Suffice it to say, this one can be a real lifesaver.
