Stay Hydrated
This one will come as no surprise, but it’s tried and true and sure to help you, especially on a hot summer day. Ladies and gentlemen, please stay hydrated. While water will always be your best bet, you can also use sports drinks like Gatorade; that is, so long as they have more enough electrolytes. After all, that’s one of the main goals of hydrating – refueling your electrolytes. For more information about the best ways to stay hydrated while SUP-ing, click here.
Dress for the Weather
Next up, let’s talk about the dress code for optimal paddling. In a nutshell, whatever season it might be, it is always imperative to dress for the weather. During summer, for example, we recommend dressing lightly, as you will likely work up a sweat while you’re out there. Furthermore, the more layers on your body, the harder it will be to cool off. Therefore, in our estimation, the lighter and more breathable your outfit is, the better your paddle will be. Waterproof Sunscreen
While we do think it’s best to dress lightly for a summer SUP session, you will still want to protect your body as best you can. In other words, the fewer layers of clothing you wear, the more exposed you are to the elements, including harmful UV rays. To protect yourself, your skin, and your health, consider using waterproof sunscreen. Trust us, it can really have some short-term and long-term health benefits.
Take Frequent Breaks
In addition to waterproof sunscreen, try to limit your exposure to direct sunlight. While you can certainly SUP for hours on end, be sure to take frequent breaks and get out of the sun whenever possible. This can help to avoid a wide variety of potential health concerns, including sunburn, exhaustion, heatstroke, etc. In short, if you feel like you could use a break, then, by all means, please take it. After all, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially in the hottest season of the year.
Practice Self-Care
Finally, please be sure to practice self-care, whatever that means to you. For example, some of our favorite post-workout self-care routines include stretching, showering, eating healthy, and making more than enough time to rest and relax. For a full-length blog all about self-care, click here.
