Whether you’re a brand-new member of the stand-up paddle board (SUP) community or a seasoned veteran with tons of experience, it’s never a bad idea to go over the basics. For instance, one of the most common questions we hear is, “What is the best way to stand on an SUP?” Now, you may think this is a bit of a no-brainer, but, trust us, you would be surprised; not only by how often we hear this question, but also by how many people are SUP-ing incorrectly. Rest assured, as always, our team at Atoll Boards has got you covered.
How and Where to Stand on an SUP
First things first, this is a two-part equation. In order to properly SUP, one needs to know how and where to stand on one’s board. While the ‘how’ is a little more detailed, the ‘where’ is plain and simple. When you stand on your SUP, you want to be exactly in the middle of it – as dead center as possible. Also the center of gravity, the middle of your board is the best place to be. If you’re not sure how to find the middle of your SUP, look for the carry handle; barring any unknown exceptions, the carry handle should always be in the middle of the board.
Now, as for how to stand on your SUP, position your feet so they are parallel, about hip-width apart, and centered between the edges of the board. Throughout your paddle, try to keep your toes pointing forwards, knees slightly bent, and back straight. Additionally, you’ll want to keep your head and shoulders steady and upright while shifting your weight by moving your hips. Finally, avoid looking at your feet; your eyes should be focused on the horizon. Not only is this good for posture and performance, but it is also imperative to be aware of your surroundings, especially any fellow water sports enthusiasts.

Trust us, this is simply a matter of habit building. Just follow our steps, keep at it, and before you know it you’ll be SUP-ing like a pro. One final tip before we go: it’s a whole lot easier to stand on your SUP when it’s already in motion. That said, if you’re having a hard time getting started, try to get your board moving while kneeling on top of it. Then, when you’re ready, switch from kneeling to standing. To do so, get up steadily but decisively – committing to the motion. The more you hesitate or pause in the middle of the motion, the tougher the transition will become. So, that said, if you’re going to go for it, then do exactly that; go for it! As soon as you’re upright on your board, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world; and then, the world will truly be yours to explore.
