Whether you’ve been stand-up paddle boarding (SUP-ing) for a few days or a few years, there are many things that all of us can continue to work on every single time we go out on the water. Take, for instance, hydration. While it may seem like a bit of a no-brainer, it is nonetheless one of the most important things you can do to get the most out of your paddle. Simply put, the better you are at hydrating, the better you will be at SUP-ing. As always, our team at Atoll Boards has got you covered. Just keep on reading to learn all our favorite tips and tricks for how to stay hydrated while stand-up paddle boarding!
Tips and Tricks for Staying Hydrated on Your SUP
As you probably already know, the absolute best way to hydrate is by simply drinking water. Plain and simple, nothing hydrates the human body better than water. That said, for shorter and more recreational paddles, we recommend just sticking to water. If this is a little too plain for you, consider adding a lemon slice or some other type of fruit. Not only will it give your water more flavor, but—depending on which fruit you choose—it can also add some natural sugar, vitamins, minerals, etc.
For longer and more intense paddles, on the other hand, we recommend adding some electrolytes to your water. Of course, this can be done in many different ways. Personally, we like to add a sports drink to our water, with a 50/50 split at most. In other words, your beverage of choice should be at least 50% water. Like we said before, nothing will hydrate you better than water. Speaking of, don’t wait until you feel dehydrated! Make sure you’re staying hydrated from the get-go. If you do, you’ll feel better, paddle better, and even think better. Suffice it to say, you’ll have a much better SUP session if you’re good about staying hydrated from start to finish. For this, we recommend hydrating approximately every 20 minutes. Trust us, your body, mind, and spirit will thank you for it.

As for how to get better about hydration in general, try to make it a daily habit. Not just when you’re going paddle boarding, but also when you’re at work, home, or anything else. The more you do it without thinking about it, the better. Perhaps the best way to develop the habit is to have a singular reusable water bottle that you take with you everywhere. Every time you leave your home, you bring the water bottle with you. Additionally, if you’re able to do this with one that can clip onto your SUP via a carabiner or a similar device, then it will eventually become a force of habit. Meaning, in a matter of time, you’ll leave the house for an SUP session, bring your water bottle, and clip it onto your SUP without even thinking about it! Then, when you look down and see it, you’ll instinctively take a sip; and then, suddenly, you’ll be better hydrated simply because of this healthy habit you’ve built. If you can do that, then it will be a whole lot easier to stay hydrated while stand-up paddle boarding.
