One of the best things about stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) is the wide variety of sports and activities that they can accommodate. In addition to high-intensity workouts like SUP racing and touring, one can also burn a ton of calories with low-intensity options like SUP yoga, fishing, and—of course—meditating. Of course, just like any other type of SUP activity, there are certain things that one can do to get more out of their meditation. As a matter of fact, our team at Atoll Boards has a whole list of tips and tricks for meditating on a stand-up paddle board, and we’ll bet that they’ll make your next practice even better than the last one. As always, we have everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!
Carefully Select a Peaceful Location
For many people, a good meditation practice begins with a serene setting. In other words, it can be very important to carefully select a peaceful location, especially if you’re hoping to do a silent or unguided meditation. For this, we recommend a place in nature—such as a beach, lake, or forest—that is relatively well-removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. After all, the less background noise, the easier it will be to quiet your mind, find your inner peace, etc.
Consider Beginning with Some Yoga
When getting ready to start your practice, consider beginning with some yoga. Why? Because regular yoga practice increases body awareness, relieves chronic stress patterns, relaxes the mind, centers attention, creates mental clarity and calmness, and sharpens concentration – all of which can enhance one’s practice.
Pick a Meditation Pose: Yogic, Sitting, or Lying Down
Next, when you’re ready to begin the meditation, pick a pose: yogic, sitting, or lying down. Naturally, all of these options have their own unique benefits. For many meditations, sitting is recommended; for others, a yogic pose may enhance the practice; and, in the world of SUP meditation, lying down is a special experience in and of itself. When lying down on your SUP, you don’t need to think about your posture, pose, or anything else. You can simply rest, relax, and practice your meditation. Trust us, if you’ve never done it before, then you need to try meditating on your back on top of your SUP; it is truly an incredible experience.

Try Out the Other Options and Find Your Perfect Fit
Finally, if your first SUP meditation doesn’t match up with your expectations, don’t be discouraged. Rather, try out the other options of how to practice on your SUP, experiment with all of them, and eventually you will find your perfect fit – the combination of that creates the most conducive environment for meditation, mindfulness, etc. Additionally, if you’re having problems getting started, be sure to try out more than one location. Sometimes we need a reset; not just mentally, but also geographically. In short, they don’t call it a ‘practice’ for nothing. Keep at it. You’ll get there eventually. And trust us, it will be worth the wait.
