In our estimation, spring may be the most beautiful season of all. While winter, summer, and fall have their own unique and attractive qualities, there is simply no comparison to watching the world come back to life. As the snow melts away and the birds begin to play, one can’t help but to embrace all the possibilities that come with a new year. For many members of the stand-up paddle board (SUP) community, this includes the return of SUP season! As we look forward to longer days, more sunlight, and countless SUP sessions, we must remember what to wear for stand-up paddle boarding in spring! As always, our team at Atoll Boards has everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!
Different Types of Spring Weather
As much as we love spring, it can be a tricky time of year in terms of temperature, attire, and more. While some parts of the world are warming up, others are relatively stagnant, as they are stuck with wintery weather that has well outstayed its welcome. In other words, the most appropriate SUP outfit will depend on where you live, what the weather is like, etc.
If Your Spring Feels More Like Winter
For those of you in colder, harder climates, you may want to dress as though your spring feels more like winter. Luckily, we’ve already written several blogs about cold paddle paddling, how to dress for it, etc. More specifically, we’ve got you covered in terms of cold water paddling safety tips, knowing when it’s too cold to go paddle boarding, tips and tricks for paddle boarding in the snow, and even how to prepare for winter SUP sessions.
If Your Spring Feels More Like Summer
On the other hand, if your spring feels more like summer, then you may be more interested in an entirely separate reading list. For our friends with better weather, we recommend the following blogs: Top Tips for Paddling During a Windy Day, Best Tips for Paddle Boarding on a Rainy Day, and When is it Warm Enough to Start Paddle Boarding Again?

General Tips for Everyone
Returning to the conversation at hand, as for what to wear for stand-up paddle boarding in spring, we do have some general tips for everyone. First and foremost, dress for the water temperature! Yes, the air temperature is important, but the water temperature is the real difference maker, especially if you fall in unexpectedly. This is chiefly important in regards to cold water paddling, as frigid temperatures can result in shock, incapacitation, hypothermia, and other serious medical conditions.
Second, wear a personal flotation device (PFD), such as our Onyx M-16 Inflatable Belt Pack. Whether the waters are warm or brisk, it is always better to limit your risks by bringing everything you need for an SUP expedition. Trust us, if you ever need a PFD, you’ll be glad you have it with you. After all, it is always better to be safe than sorry. For the same reason, we encourage all members of the SUP community to bring more than enough rations, supplies, accessories, etc. Suffice it to say, it is always better to have something and not need it.
Finally, as for the actual attire, we recommend using our aforementioned blogs as a starting point, especially if you’re set in either a particularly warm or cool climate. Or, if you’re somewhere in the middle, we recommend dressing warmer rather than cooler, as the water temperature is typically colder than the air temperature. Still have some questions? Don’t worry, we have one last tip for you.
