Since the inception of Atoll Boards, countless members of our loyal community have asked us, “Is it safe to go SUP-ing with my dog?” In short, if you do it properly, then the answer is essentially yes. At the same time, however, it is extremely important to do it the right way. Otherwise, you and your four-legged friend could get seriously injured. So, with all of that in mind, what are some safety precautions for paddle boarding with your dog?
Safety Precautions for Paddle Boarding with Your Dog
First and foremost, just as you should always have a personal flotation device (PFD), so, too, should your dog! This can be a real life-saver, especially if you or your dog get injured, accidentally fall into the water, etc. Personally, we prefer PFDs with handles, which can be especially helpful if you need to pull your dog out of the water, prevent them from jumping in, etc. Additionally, never keep your dog on a leash while paddling, as this could inadvertently strangle them; instead, before you go out for a real-life paddle, train them enough that a leash isn’t necessary.
Train Your Dog Before Taking It Out on the Water
As we’ve outlined in another blog, it is imperative that you properly train your dog before taking it out on the water. While it may take some time to do so, we promise that it will ultimately lead to a much more enjoyable experience for you, your dog, and anyone else involved. Plus, once you have it mastered, there is nothing quite as satisfying as going out on the water with your canine companion. Trust us, it is well worth the time, patience, and energy.

Inflatable Stand-Up Paddle Boards Are Perfect For Dogs
Believe it or not, inflatable stand-up paddle boards are perfect for dogs! They provide your puppies with the traction they need for stable paws that remain firmly planted on the board. Meanwhile, hard SUPs can lead to more slip-and-slide situations, which ultimately leave both dogs and their owners unhappy, uncomfortable, etc. Our signature Atoll Boards, on the other hand, are built with the customer—and their loved ones—in mind. Of course, this includes their pets!
It’s Okay if Your Dog Doesn’t Want to SUP
Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry. If for any reason your furry little friend never gets fully comfortable on top of your paddle board, that’s okay! Not all dogs are meant to be SUP pups! If paddle boarding isn’t their thing, then try out some other outdoor activities like hiking, running, etc. After all, SUP-ing is just one of countless ways in which you and your dog can bond in the great outdoors. Don’t get too pigeonholed on just one of endless possibilities. The most important thing is to get out there, have fun, and spend some quality one-on-one time with your pup.
