As much as we love paddling, we can’t control the weather. Our team at Atoll Boards has been right there with you every single day for the past few months. First, the switch from fall to winter; then, the short days and long nights; and most recently, the bitter, brutal, and cold weather. But now, after months of waiting, we’re finally getting closer to our next warm paddle! Which begs the question, “When is it warm enough to start paddle boarding again?” As always, we have everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!
The Water Temperature is the Most Important Measurement
First things first, when planning any paddle, always remember that the water temperature is the most important measurement. You can dress for the air temperature all you want, but, trust us, when you go into the water, especially unexpectedly, you’ll wish you were dressed with the water temperature in mind. So plan ahead, dress warm, and be ready for anything.
The Safest and Most Comfortable Water Temperatures for Paddling
That said, the safest and most comfortable water temperatures for paddling typically begin at about 70°F. Anything less than this can be hazardous, to say the least. Water temperatures between 60°F and 70°F, for example, can create difficulty breathing as well as a chance of immediate shock upon entering the water. Unfortunately, it only gets worse from there, as water temperatures between 50°F and 60°F are extremely dangerous and can pose several health risks, including shock, incapacitation, and hypothermia.

Conclusion
In short, it’s best practice to wait until the water temperature is at least 70°F, or preferably even warmer. If you choose to go paddling before then, however, please be as safe as possible. Trust us, we get it. We love paddling too, but your health and safety are even more important than a good day out on the water. That’s why, just to be safe, we also have a blog entry all about how to prepare for a winter paddling session. Please read it carefully before you go out there. Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry; no exceptions.
