Massachusetts also has the added background of being one of the most historic states in the US making it a great place for a fun-filled family vacation.

To get a glimpse into what this beautiful state has to offer us paddle-adventurer’s though, we’re going to uncover 5 epic locations to paddleboard in Massachusetts. Ready to begin? Let’s dive in!

Buzzard’s Bay

Buzzards Bay is a great place to go paddleboarding, offering calm and protected waterways that are perfect for beginners.

Some recommended locations include Onset Bay in WarehamLittle Bay in Bourne, and Snug Harbor, which can be explored by launching from West Falmouth Harbor Landing. There are also several paddleboarding rental shops in the area, such as The Paddler’s Shop and Peace Love Sup.

Paddling on the bay can offer quiet leisure, intense excitement, or the perfect place for exploration and adventure.

If you had to pick one place to visit in Massachusetts for SUP, we suggest heading to the Buzzard’s Bay area. And more specifically, any of the launch locations listed above. Of course, always pay attention to the winds and tides when you decide where to go. Some locations might fare better under a certain wind direction. While others, may not.

But no matter which location you decide to head towards, you’ll likely be treated to calm waters in the morning before the wind builds, and most likely the same type of conditions around sunset. Plus, with plenty to see and do in the Buzzard’s Bay area, especially located around the launch spots, you’ll never get bored with your time on and off the water!

For a great time paddling, exploring, and having fun, be sure to choose one (or all) of the launch locations listed above!

Charles River, Boston

Our next stop for epic locations to paddle board in Massachusetts takes us to the Charles River. This location provides a calm and scenic backdrop for paddling, and there are several launch sites along the river so you can pick and choose your ideal spot.

One popular launch location is the Community Boating Inc. dock, located at 20 Overlook Road, Boston, MA. It’s popular due to its ease of access to the water.

Once you’re on the water, we recommend heading to the left towards the Charles River Esplanade. This is a sprawling 64-acre park that has the best view of Boston. In addition, you’re likely to see a few sailboats making their way along the river as well. Once off the river, you’re located in downtown Boston where you’ll be presented with endless choices of places to eat, site see, and more! If we had to pick one place to paddle in Massachusetts, it might be here.

Martha’s Vineyard

A trip to Massachusetts is not complete without checking out Martha’s Vineyard. But why is that exactly?

Martha’s Vineyard is known for its picturesque scenery, charming coastal towns, and beautiful beaches. It also has a rich history, with well-preserved Victorian-era homes and landmarks, and a thriving arts scene. In addition, the island offers a variety of outdoor activities, including boating, fishing, hiking, and cycling (SUP too, of course!), as well as delicious seafood and farm-to-table cuisine.

That’s why. As far as launch locations go, we suggest heading to the State Beach in Oak Bluffs, where you can rent boards and take lessons if need be.

Nantucket Island

If history is your game, a trip to Nantucket Island for your adventure is a must. Of course, you will have to take a ferry to get there (or fly) so keep that in mind. But once you’re there, what exactly can you expect? We’re glad you asked…

Nantucket Island is a well-preserved example of a New England whaling village and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can tour the island’s historic homes, museums, and shops to learn about the island’s maritime heritage and cultural traditions.

The Whaling Museum located in Nantucket is dedicated to the history of whaling and its impact on the island and the surrounding area. The museum features a collection of whaling artifacts, including a sperm whale skeleton, as well as interactive exhibits that showcase the life and work of Nantucket’s whaling community.

Don’t forget to check out the Jethro Coffin House. This spot is one of Nantucket’s oldest homes and is considered a prime example of Nantucket’s colonial architecture. The house is open to the public for tours, and visitors can learn about the history of the island’s early settlers and the role they played in the region’s development.

But wait, that’s not all! There’s excellent paddling here too. The best launch location is at Madaket Beach, especially if you’re interested in exploring the nearby islands and coves. For more information on visiting Nantucket Island, check out this site.

Nahanton Park

Nahanton Park in Newton, Massachusetts is a great place to unwind. Connect with nature. And of course, paddleboard – with several rental shops and launch locations available. Paddle Boston offers hourly canoe and kayak rentals at Nahanton Park, as well as an indoor function room, picnic tables, and playing fields. They also offer introductory lessons for stand-up paddleboarding. According to them, Nahanton Park is one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of flatwater on the Charles River, and paddlers can enjoy calm paddling from upstream of Dedham Ave in Needham to Silk Mill Dam at Newton Upper Falls. Almost all the shoreline is forest or marsh, and much of it is protected parkland.

Once on the water, paddlers can expect to see beautiful scenery and wildlife while there. Most of the riverbank along the Nahanton Park section is forested, perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Across from Cutler Park is Boston’s Millennium Park. At this location, there is a canoe launch where you can access walking paths, playing fields, and a picnic area. Additionally, kids can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding while playing games, splashing in the water, and having fun.

It is important to note, as we always seem to do, that the conditions you might be met with can vary depending on the weather and time of day. Always check the weather forecast and water conditions before heading out. But once there, have fun!
