New York is a name synonymous with the United States. It stands alone as one of the most popular and instantly recognizable places in the world. And unsurprisingly, it is a great place to explore on a Stand Up Paddle Board as well.

In fact, New York state has some top-tier locations for SUP. And it has it all. From surf-breaking beaches, to calm lakes, and rippling rivers, whatever your tastes are, you can find it here.

To help you pick out the best locations in the state though, we’ve narrowed it down to 5 excellent locations to explore – ones we guarantee you won’t be disappointed in. Ready to get into it? Let’s go!

Hudson River

Our first location for places to SUP in New York takes us to the famous Hudson River. While the river itself stretches for miles at a time, there are only a few launch locations worth checking out.

The best launch location is the 79th Street Boat Basin, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. From here, you can paddle north towards the George Washington Bridge or south towards the Statue of Liberty.

The second location you should check out is Newburgh Landing. The launch spot here is easy and open to the public. Head to the boat ramp for easy access to the river. Plus, after you’re done paddling, you can enjoy the day with your family walking the trails along the river, finding a great restaurant to eat at with all the views, and even checking out Bannerman Castle – a site to see from the land or the water!

It’s a great time no matter where you drop in! For directions to the 79th Street Boat Basin click here. And for more information about Newburgh Landing click here.

Lake George

Are you a mountain person? Do you enjoy wide open spaces, surrounded by rolling peaks of green-filled mountains? If so, a trip to Lake George is your ideal paddling spot in New York. Plus, along with its location in the Adirondack Mountains, Lake George is known for its crystal-clear waters perfect for exploring a SUP.

The best launch location at Lake George is the public beach at the south end of the lake, where you can rent boards and take lessons if you need to. However, if you’ve packed in your Atoll iSUP the entire lake is yours to explore.

Long Island Sound

The Long Island Sound is a great location for paddle boarding, offering a mix of calm and choppy waters. But what’s so special about the Long Island Sound?

Well, here’s a description of the area, “Long Island Sound is an estuary, a place where saltwater from the ocean mixes with fresh water from rivers draining from the land. Estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. They serve as feeding, breeding, and nursery areas for many species that spend most of their adult lives in the ocean. Our estuary is home to more than 1,200 species of invertebrates, 170 species of fish, and dozens of species of migratory birds that live for at least part of the year. Boaters and sunbathers by the thousands enjoy the Sound’s beaches and ports. Nature centers and aquariums offer a variety of educational opportunities to learn about the Sound’s ecosystem and its inhabitants.”

Sounds like plenty of wildlife, excellent beaches to sunbathe and hang out, and plenty of coastlines to explore on a SUP. What’s not to love?!

The best launch location is the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, where you can rent boards and take lessons.

Thousand Islands

Our next great place to SUP in New York takes us to the northern part of the state (we didn’t forget about you northerners!) That’s right, there’s more to New York than the greater metropolitan area. Who would have thought?

What makes this location worth exploring? The Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River offers over 1,800 islands to explore. That means you can find your own quiet spot. Plus, the sheltered bays and calm waters of the St. Lawrence River make it a suitable place for beginners to go on an adventure without high risk.

But with such ground to cover, what’s the best place to launch? The best launch location is at the Wellesley Island State Park, where you can rent boards and take guided tours. And with stunning views of the mountains while you’re on the water, you’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable time!

Jamaica Bay

Our last spot is what we believe to be New York’s biggest hidden treasure – Jamaica Bay. Why? First, it’s accessible from downtown Manhattan which means you can have the best of both worlds in one day – high-energy city life with calm, backwater nature. Plus…

With its diverse wildlife, including over 325 species of birds, Jamaica Bay is a prime destination for bird watching and wildlife observation. The protected waters of the bay are relatively calm, making it a good place for beginner and intermediate paddle boarders to hone their skills. The scenery is simply breathtaking with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Salt marshes. And sandy beaches provide a stunning backdrop for your paddleboarding adventure. The bay is easily accessible by car. And there are several launch sites and rental facilities for paddle boards in the area. Additionally, Jamaica Bay offers a variety of recreational activities, including fishing. Kayaking. And hiking. Making it a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

While there are a few launch locations you can explore including Breezy Point Tip and the Wildlife Refuge, but we recommend Floyd Bennet Field. It’s a historic airfield that’s now a park and it offers several launch sites for paddle boards. Pretty neat!

Conclusion

Ready to explore one of these places to SUP in New York? As we said, whether you like mountain landscapes, rushing rivers, calm lakes, or open beaches, New York has it all. And with the most famous city in the world to explore, you’ll never be bored. Just remember to pack in your Atoll iSUP for easy access to whatever launch location you plan on visiting!
